Weekly Bulletin #4 - Week of 9/21

posted Sep 19, 2009, 12:52 PM by PMS Coach
Dear Piedmont Middle School Parents of Cross Country Runners:

Our first meet is Monday, Sept. 21 and our second meet of the season is on Thursday,
Sept. 24.  The meet on Monday is at a great venue, Golden Gate Fields Race Track and we are lucky to be able to run there.  I hope many of you can join us, I will try to take lots of photos to capture the meet in case you can't be there.
Please remind your child to bring their running attire (singlet) and shoes, and to walk right after school to the Piedmont Community Hall, 711 Highland Ave. where the drivers will meet them.  The drivers should arrive around 3:00 p.m. or so, a representative from the Rec Dept. needs to check you in.  The meets start at 4:15 p.m., so it is important to leave as soon as your car has been loaded with kids.  Attached are the directions to the meet.  Our website also has maps for these locations: My cell number is included, 510-304-9533.  The kids can either change into their running attire at the meet or wear it under their regular clothing, changing into it prior to their last period.  Please note, there is no practice on meet days, if your child is not running in the meet, they should go home after school.   Many thanks to our team parents who are coordinating the drivers and snack providers for the season:
Kim Lally - 8th Grade
Adam Betta - 7th Grade
Cynthia Baringer - 6th Grade
At the end of this message, there is a list of the kids who have indicated to me they plan to run in the meets next week, if there are any changes, please let me know. There are a number of kids who for Thursday's meet indicated "not sure."  Please e-mail me if you decide to run in the meet so we can be sure to have enough drivers.

To give you some idea of the meet timeline, here is my best guess, based on past experience:
  - 4:15 to 4:30 -- 6th grade boys race
  - 4:30 to 4:45  -- 6th grade girls race
  - 4:45 to 5:05 -- 7th & 8th grade boys race
  - 5:10 to 5:30  -- 7th & 8th grade girls race
Once the 6th graders are done with their race, they are free to leave, or they can stay and cheer on their teammates. Remember if your child is scheduled to run the PE mile on a meet day, have them inform the teacher they are on the cross country team and they are running in a meet that day.  They still have to run the mile but they can take it easy.  I understand that a coach cannot excuse a child from running the PE mile but at the same time the teachers understand why a child should take it easy.  If you have questions or don't understand, call me.

A brief re-cap of last week, it was a good week for practicing and the kids did some good workouts.  We ran a "time trial" on Monday and Tuesday to try and simulate what a cross country race is like.  (Results from the Monday time trial are attached).   I discussed with some of the groups of kids the meet format and how cross country scoring works, i.e., low score wins, first 5 finishers are your scorers and the other runners "off set" the runners from  the other schools.  A bit complicated but I think they get the general idea.  The important thing is participation and trying your best.  I have had teams win a championship by just showing up and finishing, so that's why having  5 runners is important.   On Monday, we also had a pizza party at the end of practice and I would like to thank Rustica Pizza for helping defray part of the cost of the pizzas.  In addition, we handed out the team singlet which has to be returned at the end of the season.
On Tuesday, we went for a short endurance run while some kids who missed the time trial ran it.  We also practiced running stairs and did the "run for the money" as part of a hill workout.  Due to the heat, the treat was otter pops.  We also handed out the cross country t-shirts which the kids are to keep.  On Thursday, I didn't realize there was a Freshman and JV football game taking place at the same time as practice.  I mentioned to the kids that's why it is important to always have a contingency plan to fall back on.  As a result, we did a long run to Mountain View Cemetery, about 2 miles round trip.  The treat for the day was Attune bars and Pop Chips.

For next week, just to remind you, meets on Monday and Thursday, regular practice on Tuesday.  Our website has the most current miles the students have earned.  Go to:
Click on "2009 Mileage Tracking Report" and open the document to view your miles.  Any questions, let me know.  A number of kids have already earned the Jamba Juice Card and next up for them is the Fenton's gift card.  Again, if your child can only practice once a week, because of another sport, let me know, they will get credit for the other sport.
One final item, PMS host a meet on October 1 at Temescal Regional Park.  I need 2-3 parent volunteers who can help myself and the coaches put on this meet.  You will have to be prepared to help out from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m.  Respond to this e-mail if you can help.  Thank you.
