Weekly Bulletin #2 - Week of 9/7

posted Sep 5, 2009, 5:11 PM by PMS Coach
Dear Piedmont Middle School Parents of 7th & 8th Grade Cross Country Runners:
This week marked our first full week of practices on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.  An average of about 35 kids attended each practice and I can already see progress being made.  We really appreciate the support and interest in the program, but still can use a few more girls on the team, at all grade levels.  Again any child is welcome to first check out practice and then decide if they would like to enroll.  I anticipate keeping enrollment open until late September.
Please don't forget to submit the "Show of Interest" form for what meets your child would like to compete in.  The form is attached and you can also complete it on-line.  The link is:
http://www.pmscc.com/parents      Just click on the "Meet Show of Interest" line on this web page.  It will ask for a password and it is:  pmsparent
Note, the plan is that a team parent, to be announced, will contact you about driving to the meets or providing snacks.  If you are willing to be a team parent, let me know.
A brief re-cap of the week is as follows.  It was hot most days, again please have your child bring their own water bottle to practice.  Also, if a child is not feeling well during a workout for whatever reason, they need to tell me or one of the other coaches, so we can have them sit out and we can be check them out.  We never have a child do a particular activity if they don't want too and they have a legitimate reason.  For example, one activity was a run to Dracena Park and back, I announced to the kids that if they felt already fatigued, they could stay at Witter field with me and just walk around the track.  Our longer endurance runs this week included a preview jog of the "time trial course," a run into Piedmont Park and the run to Dracena.
I introduced the 6th graders to "run for the money", while the 7th & 8th graders did a relay race.  In addition, all the kids had their first introduction to track workouts as we did "on/offs" and "leap frog."   We took frequent water breaks during every practice and the treats this week included "otter pops," granola cereal, and energy bars provided by one of our sponsors, Attune Foods.
The schedule for next week is as follows:
Monday - September 7 - Labor Day Holiday, no practice (run on your on and earn double miles)
Tuesday - September 8 - Practice from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m.
Thursday - September 10 - Minimum Day, two options for practice are 12:45 to 2:15 p.m. or
3:15 to 4:45 p.m.
Note: 6th graders have a party that afternoon and do not have to attend practice.
Attached is our calendar for the season, subject to change and another version of it is available on our website at:  http://www.pmscc.com/calendarNote
Also, please tell your child that Monday, September 14 will be our pizza party and uniform distribution day.  I realize that not every child will be able to attend, however I can only afford to host one pizza party.  Uniforms will be available at every practice starting with September 14th.  The kids will get a t-shirt which they get to keep and a singlet to race in for the meets.  Please note, the singlets are to be returned at the end of the season and if it is lost or not returned you will be charged the replacement cost.  You are responsible for providing the running shorts, its okay to use the PE shorts.
The kids have asked a lot of questions about the mileage award program and the miles they have earned.  I have attached the report as of 9/4, please share it with your child.  It is also on the website.  Let me know if you have any corrections to it.  The Copper and Bronze level awards will be handed out next week in practice.   In summary, they earn 2 miles for every practice they attend.  If a child can only attend one practice a week due to another sport they are playing, I will give them additional credit every week for 2 miles in recognition of the exercise they get in the other sport.  You need to tell me if your child is only able to attend once a week due to another sports activity.  Also, they can run on the weekend for extra credit, but the most I want them to run is 2 miles, if they run more, I do not count that.
Please note, to incent the kids to run on Labor Day, I will double any miles they run that day up to a maximum of 2 miles.  So if they run 1 mile it is doubled to 2 miles and 2 miles is doubled to 4 miles.  The extra credit does not include miles run in a weekend soccer tournament, etc., the child must have done a unique run separate from another sport.  You can report extra credit on-line, by going to this link: http://www.pmscc.com/parents
Click on "Extra Credit Form."
Also, if your child has not turned in their "Questionnaire" I would like it this week.  This form can be found at:
If you have any questions, please let me know.
