Weekly Bulletin #1 - Week of 9/6

posted Sep 5, 2010, 3:50 PM by PMS Coach

Dear PMS Cross Country Parents & Kids:

Welcome
I wanted to welcome you and your child to our cross country program.  Thank you for signing up your child to participate.  If you haven't completed the registration paperwork, please do so.  If your child is undecided, I hope they will sign up and join us.  The PMS cross country program is off and running as this week marked our first practice and the program's 5th year.  It was both an exciting and awesome sight to see 70+ kids jogging around the track at the beginning of our first practice.  This was the largest turnout for any cross country practice ever!
I would also like to welcome you to my weekly bulletin that will be used to communicate news of the team and keep you informed.  Please share this bulletin with your child.  This first bulletin will be a rather lengthy, and I know you probably have a lot of other reading from the school, but please read this message in its entirety.

Review of First Practice
To briefly re-cap, at our first practice of the season, it was hot!    As I mentioned before, I would like every child to bring their own water bottle to practice but for these first couple of weeks I will also provide water.  Sun screen is another must, even on a cloudy day sun can be a factor.  I will do doing some things slightly different than in past years, one is every child and coach must wear a "name badge" with their first name, I will supply these at each practice.  In addition, near the start of practice we will gather for a "team cheer."  For some practices, starting very soon, kids will be divided into pace groups, so these groups will be a combination of gender and grade level.

Because of the heat, we took it kind of easy running wise on Thursday.  The kids were divided into 3 groups and they did a "shuttle relay" on the track, also we did a run into Piedmont Park and finally worked on form drills and exercises using the speed ladder and hurdles. To add an incentive to the relay workout, I awarded Yogofina gift cards to the teams that finished in the top.  I hope during the course of the season that all the kids will be awarded one of these gift cards.   Each practice will follow a similar format with a warm-up jog, group exercises, an endurance run of about 1 mile (with walk breaks along the way usually), form drills, and an obstacle course exercise with agility ladders and hurdles (6 and 12 inch), and time permitting an active game.  At the end of practice, the kids received either an "Otter Pop" or a energy bar or fruit roll as a treat.  If your child is allergic to any foods, please let me know.  Thanks to donations from Clif Bars and Annie's Natural, we will be giving the kids a treat after all practices.

Next Week's Practices
Our practices next week are on Tuesday and Thursday starting at 3:15 and ending at 4:45 p.m.   The emphasis the first few weeks is on building endurance and conducting some "time trials" on the track to get an idea of each child's level of conditioning.  We will take several water breaks during practice and please encourage your child to hydrate during school hours and at home.  Also, make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast and lunch plus a snack, these meals will be the fuel they will need for practice.  Our total daily mileage, and this is broken up into several segments, is about two miles.  Our endurance runs will often entail running into the neighborhood, like Crocker Park, Hampton Field, Dracena Park, Coaches Field, etc.  These runs will of course be supervised by the coaches.  Some of the running incorporates hills and stairs, since the courses where we will be racing will have these features.
Note, practices are held rain or shine as our meets.

Our regular schedule of practices is right after school on Mondays from 2:15 to 3:45 p.m.; and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15 p.m. to 4:45.  We meet at Witter Field.  Your child can come as often as they want to practices, but it is required that they attend a minimum of once a week.
Our first meet is scheduled for Thursday, September 23 at Mills College in Oakland.  Also, we are hosting a meet on Thursday, September 30th at Temescal Park in Oakland.  There will be more information on these meets in future bulletins.  As mentioned previously, the complete schedule of meets has not yet been finalized.  However, we will need parents to drive the kids to the meets and provide snacks, we depend on your support so that every child who wants to run in the meets has transportation.  If your child wants to run in some upcoming races on a Saturday at some of the local invitational meets that have a middle school race or in the Junior Olympics cross country races, contact me for more information.

Reminder - Questionnaire
I have asked the kids to complete, with your assistance, a brief questionnaire.  (See Attached.)  I would like it returned as soon as possible and as part of our Mileage Award Program the kids will get one bonus mile for returning it by September 13.  If your child can only attend one cross country practice a week due to participation in another sport, i.e., soccer, flag football, hockey, etc., please let me know so I can factor this into the miles they earn.

We are lucky to have an outstanding group of coaches.  I encourage you to read the short bio of each coach that is on our website: http://www.pmscc.com/coaches   We have several new coaches this season and will soon be adding another coach, Christine Chapon, a Piedmont resident who has a son in high school.
The plan is to have at least 3 coaches at each practice, parents are welcome to observe practice to see what we do.  We are looking forward to this season and coaching your child.

Finally don't forget if your child runs this weekend and/or on Monday they can earn extra credit for the mileage awards program.  Note they do not get extra credit for competing in soccer or some other sport, it has to be a stand alone run.  The link to the form is:  http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3P5KZV8

I have a lost and found item, sunglasses with a pink frame, see me at practice if it is yours.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Weekly Bulletin #11 - Week of 11/9 (7 & 8th Graders)

posted Nov 8, 2009, 4:56 PM by PMS Coach

Dear Parents of 7th & 8th Grade Cross Country Runners:

This past week marked the end of the season for most of the kids, except for those who have opted to run in the Bay Area Championship Meet.  I know for myself and the other coaches there is always some regret to see the season end, as we have seen throughout the season the kids grow as runners, as a team, and as individuals.  Every season is memorable in some way and we will take those memories with us with fondness.  Thank you for your support, for encouraging your child, for driving, providing snacks and supporting the program.  Myself and the coaches would like to thank you also for the generous gift given us at the banquet on Tuesday night.  There will be one more bulletin, with a season summary that I will issue in the next week or so.  Below are the items that need your attention, thank you.

Len Goldman

Bay Area Championship Meet - Tuesday, November 10
The following 7th graders have expressed interest in running in this meet:
Chase Betta, Sarah Ching, Pierce Constanti (maybe), Jack Flynn (maybe), Michael Kuroda, Sofia Lautt, Andrew Strauch, Miles Von Hermann.  To my knowledge, no 8th graders plan on running in this meet.
The kids are to walk up to the usual place at the final bell on Tuesday.
Please note, we need one or two drivers, currently no one has volunteered.   Please respond to this e-mail if you can drive.
Attached are directions.

7 & 8th Grade Championship Meet
The meet was held at Kennedy Grove, both boys and girls teams finished in 4th place.  Our girls team was missing their top runner, Anna Harleen who was injured.  Sofia Lautt was our only runner to finish in the top ten, placing 9th.  Just missing out on a trophy was Sarah Ching in 11th place.  Angel Rael also placed well, complete results are not yet available.  For the boys, Kevin Wu our top runner all season, although injured for this meet, he ran, but finished back in the pack a bit.  Our top finisher was Matthew Gologorsky, a 3 year veteran who finished in 11th place.
Pictures from the meet can be found at:

Bay Area Championship Meet - Tuesday, November 10
The following 6th graders have expressed interest in running in this meet:
Chris Baringer, Kyle & Nicole Bilorusky, Maddie Copeland, Everett Ellis (maybe),
Alex Harrison, Dylan Porter, Alexandra Shoptaugh, Mitch Winters.

Dane Copeland will drive the three girls who will be excused early because their race starts at 3:50 pm.  The boys are to walk up to the usual place at the final bell on Tuesday.
John Bilorusky will drive the boys although it would be nice if another parent could drive also and perhaps take some of the 7th graders.  Attached are directions.

6th Grade Championship Meet
The meet was held at Prospect Sierra and featured competitive races for both the boys and girls.  On the girls side, Piedmont was the only school besides Albany to field a team of 5, Albany had a dozen girls.  That kind of depth was too much to overcome as our girls finished 2nd, the best showing ever by a PMS 6th grade girls team.  Maddie Copeland lead the way with a 2nd place finish, earning a trophy.  Madison Tenney was 11th, Alexandra Shoptaugh was 16th, Megan Wilensky was 22nd, and Nicole Bilorusky was 24th.
For the boys, we had 10 runners in the race.  The team was led by Alex Harrison and Everett Ellis who finished in 18th and 19th place respectively.  The boys team finished in 5th place in the meet.   To view the complete meet results and times, go to:

Weekly Bulletin #10 - Week of 11/2 (7&8th Graders)

posted Oct 31, 2009, 12:17 PM by PMS Coach

Dear Parents of 7th & 8th Grade Cross Country Runners:

The season is fast coming to an end, for those kids who started running in August with the pre-season conditioning program, I applaud you for hanging in there.  I won't know until sometime next week if we will participate in the Bay Area Championship Meet on November 10.  We still need more kids to sign up to make it worth the effort.  In the meantime, here are the items I need you to review.

League Championship Meet - Thursday, November 5
As usual, meet at the Piedmont Community Hall, right after school on Thursday the 5th.  Adam and Kim will contact you about driving.  The meet starts at 4:00 pm and it will take 30 minutes to drive there so please remind your child to go directly to where the carpool'ers will be.  The meet location is Kennedy Grove in El Sobrante, directions are attached.
We need every child for this meet, if your child can't run because of illness, let me know ASAP.

Practice on Monday - November 2
The final practice for the 7 & 8th graders will be on Monday, right after school.  Please let your child know.  Alison and Melissa will be in charge of this practice, while I will be at the 6th grade Championship meet.  Practice will end a bit early, probably around 4:30 p.m.

Bay Area Championship Meet - Tuesday, November 10
So far I have only heard from a handful of you, and unless more kids are interested in participating I am not sure we will send teams.  So please respond to this e-mail or you can go to this link: http://www.pmscc.com/parents
The kids who I have as wanting to run in this meet are: Chase Betta, Michael Kuroda, Sofia Lautt, and Kevin Wu.
Click on Bay Area XC Meet Show of Interest and indicate if you are interested or not.
I will let you know next week if we will be participating or not.

Fall Sports Banquet
Wednesday, Nov. 4 is the date of the Fall sports banquet.  It is in the evening, I hope your child can make it.

Mills College Meet and Pictures
Briefly, for the girls, we only had a few of the girls present and our #1 runner, Anna Harleen, was feeling under the weather.  Still we had 3 girls in the top 10, Sarah Ching (6th), Anna Harleen (8th), and Angel Rael (9th).  For the boys, our #1 runner Kevin Wu turned his ankle and could not finish, I think he will be okay to run in the championship meet.  We had 3 boys finish in the top 10, Andrew Strauch (4th), Thomas Horn (5th), and Jack Flynn (8th).  Check our website for complete results and pictures, including pictures from Fentons.  www.pmscc.com

Singlet
Even though there may be one more meet for the kids, Nov. 10, we would like the singlets turned into me directly after the championship meet.  Make sure I get your name before you turn it in.  If we run in the meet on the 10th the kids can run in the t-shirt given them.

Weekly Bulletin #9 - Week of 10/26

posted Oct 24, 2009, 1:12 PM by PMS Coach

Dear Piedmont Middle School 7 & 8th Grade Parents of Cross Country Runners:

First let me review the schedule for this coming week.  On Monday (10/26), we have a meet at Mills College.  Directions are attached.  The list of 7 & 8th graders scheduled to run is listed below.  This is our last meet before the championships.  If your child is scheduled to run in this meet and for some reason they can't, please let me know.
Tuesday is a regular practice, and then Thursday, the run to Fenton's, an event many kids have been looking forward to all season.  Please make sure your child has $10 for whatever treat they want to get, or if they have earned a Fenton's gift card, they can use that.   Also, if possible, can you please meet your child at Fenton's and drive them home.  If you can't we will run back to the track afterwards, but they may not be home until after 5 p.m.

I was proven wrong this past week, as we had a meet cancelled due to rain.  I can't remember the last time that happened, but due to slippery trails it was probably best.  The meet will not be re-scheduled at that location.
Also, our championship meet is next week (Thursday, November 5th) and this is what we have been training for all season.   It is important that every child who can run in this meet be there, you never know what can happen, and the meet can be decided by the slimmest of margins.  The top 10 runners in each race are suppose to receive a trophy and every child will get a participant ribbon.  I would like to do a walk through of the course next weekend if there is sufficient interest.  The location is Kennedy Grove in El Sobrante about a 25 minute drive.  For those who are available, we can car pools and I understand if you can't.   Please let me if you are interested and what day, Saturday or Sunday, works best for you.

This past week, the kids ran in a meet at Rancho Laguna on Thursday.  Official results are not available yet, check the website, www.pmscc.com, as they will be posted there.  Preliminarily it appears that the 7th grade boys course record was broken by Thomas Horn and his time was 7:47.  Jack Flynn was just a few seconds behind him and he also broke the record.  Space does not permit to list all the PMS boys in the race, but I was pleased with the turnout and how well they ran despite several who were recovering from colds.  On the girls side, only 4 PMS girls ran in the race with Sofia Lautt leading the way in 8:34 followed by Chole Jiang and Sydney Williams.  Sydney had the misfortune to turn an ankle but still gamely limped in.  Lauren Ratzer also ran, but incurred a fall during the race and although she was shaken by it, was fine afterward.   Photos can be found on-line at:

As previously mentioned, the kids have a chance to participate in the 1st Annual Bay Area Middle School Cross-Country Championship.  The details are as follows:
Date: Tuesday, November 10, 2009
Time: 1st Race = 3:50 PM
Location: John Muir Middle School, 1444 Williams Street, San Leandro, CA  94577
Race Distance: 1.0 Miles
However, I need your "show of interest" to determine if we have enough kids who want to run in this meet.

Weekly Bulletin #8 - Week of 10/19

posted Oct 17, 2009, 12:48 PM by PMS Coach

Dear Piedmont Middle School Parents of Cross Country Runners:

Just a few more weeks and the cross country season will go into the record books.  As I previously stated, all our teams have performed solidly with our 7/8 Grade boys and girls teams and the 6th grade girls team possibly being contenders in the championship meet.  Our 6th grade boys have a chance too, but it will take a team effort to accomplish this.  We need to continue to train and stay healthy however, plus there are 3 more regular season meets on the schedule.  Remember, practices & meets are held rain or shine.
This week, we have two meets, one on Monday, 10/19, is a meet at Kennedy Grove, directions are attached and on Thursday, 10/22, there is a meet in Moraga at Rancho Laguna.  Tuesday is a regular practice day.  Kids scheduled to run in the meets this week are listed below.
As I mentioned last time, the kids have a chance to participate in the 1st Annual Bay Area Middle School Cross-Country Championship.  The details are as follows:
Date: Tuesday, November 10, 2009
Time: 1st Race = 3:50 PM
Location: John Muir Middle School, 1444 Williams Street, San Leandro, CA  94577
Race Distance: 1.0 Miles
4 Races: JV Girls, JV Boys, Varsity Girls, Varsity Boys (in this order)
Awards: Trophies to top boys & girls teams in varsity races; Plaques to top 10 boys & top 10 girls in varsity races (“All-Bay Area Team”).
However, I need your "show of interest" to determine if we have enough kids who want to run in this meet.
Please go to this link: http://www.pmscc.com/parents
Click on Bay Area XC Meet Show of Interest and indicate if you are interested or not.
This past week because of 2 days with no school, our schedule was changed.  15 kids showed up for practice Monday at noon and we did a track workout.  Wednesday the kids ran to Mulberry's and Thursday was a meet in El Cerrito.
Results and photos are not available yet, check our website for updates.  In the 6th grade girls race, a volunteer mis-directed the runners so it was a bit chaotic, Madison Tenney finished in 3rd place.  For 6th grade boys our top finisher was Everett Ellis in 10th place.  For the 7/8th grade girls, our top finisher was Angel Rael in 5th place, and for the 7/8th grade boys, Kevin Wu was 2nd, Matthew Gologorsky was 4th, Andrew Strauch was 6th and Thomas Horn was 7th.  Andrew may have broken the PMS 7th grade course record but I have to await the official results.
Finally something I don't think I have addressed is the question of what to eat before a meet.  The kids need to eat breakfast and lunch like they normally do.  It takes 3-4 hours for the food to be digested, so a lunch around Noon to 1:00 pm is fine.  A small snack and fluids an hour or more before the meet is okay and will take the edge off their hunger and provide a small energy boost.  I would suggest fruit, energy bar, fruit roll, etc. Everyone is different and some have more sensitive stomachs than others, if you experiment three or four times prior to a race, you'll be able to dial in what works for your child.
Don't forget, October 29 is our run to Fenton's.  Lots of kid's will have earned their Fenton's gift card by then and should use that to pay for what they buy.  Otherwise $10 should cover the cost.  I would like the kids to be picked up at Fenton's otherwise we will run/walk back to the track.  If you have any questions, please contact me.

Dear Piedmont Middle School Parents of Cross Country Runners:

This coming week we kind of have a break in the schedule due to no school on Monday and Tuesday.  So here is the plan for next week:
Monday - Optional practice at the track, Noon to 1:00 p.m.
Tuesday - No practice
Wednesday - Practice from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m., run to Mulberry's bring some money if you want to buy something
Thursday - Meet at Prospect-Sierra in El Cerrito

Of course, the kids are encouraged to run on their own and earn extra credit, just a reminder you cannot count soccer matches, swim practice, basketball practice, etc. for extra credit, it must be running not associated with any other sports activity.  Hiking does not count either.
To remind you, you can submit the extra credit forms on-line, just go to:
http://www.pmscc.com/parents and click on "Extra Credit Form."

This past week, on October 5, the team traveled to Orinda for a meet with their closest rivals.  35 PMS runners participated and the meet was highlighted by 6th grader Maddie Copeland winning her race and provisionally setting a new school record for this course for 6th grade PMS girls.  (I am awaiting official results from the race director.)  Also finishing well in the standings were Alexandra Shoptaugh in 8th place and Nicole Bilorusky in 15th place.  For the 6th grade boys, PMS had two top ten finishers Alex Harrison in 5th place and Kyle Bilorusky in 6th places.  In the 7th and 8th grade boys race, Kevin Wu continued his fine season and was the runner-up in 2nd place, with Matthew Gologorsky coming in 7th and Andrew Jara was the 9th place finisher.  In the final race for the 7 & 8th grade girls, finishing in the top 10 was Anna Harleen and Angel Rael.  Pictures from the meet taken by Paul Kuroda can be found at:
At the remaining practices, this past week we worked a lot on doing some workouts at race pace.  These can be uncomfortable, because they are physically taxing.  Any child who legitimately feels they cannot do these workouts, I do excuse them, but after being a coach for 7 years and a runner my entire life, I know when someone is telling the truth or is just trying to avoid a hard workout.  These workouts will continue to be part of our regimen until the end of the season.  One other thing, on Thursday the kids got to try out the new agility equipment purchased for the team by the Boosters Club.  The response was very positive and again we appreciate this support.

A couple of other items, just to confirm, I have made a reservation at Fenton's for Thursday, October 29.  The plan is for the kids to run there and I would really appreciate it if the parents could pick the kids up at Fenton's.  We should finish around 4:45 or so, service there is not exactly speedy.
The Mileage Award data cumulative through 10/9 is attached and is also on our website.  If there are any errors please contact me.  A majority of the kids have earned Jamba Juice cards and quite a few are up to the Fenton cards now.
The Gold Medal Awards this past week were to Chloe Jiang, Wills Bird, and Miles Von Herman.
A little advance planning, as most of you know the Piedmont Turkey Trot is on Thanksgiving Day.  Cross country team members have run in it every year and we get a super discounted rate, just $10 per child and they get a t-shirt too.  All I need to know at this point is if your child is interested in running in this race.  It is Thanksgiving Day at 8:30 a.m. and the distance is a 5K.  Also, to assist with the race, volunteers are needed race day, so if you can lend a hand that morning, let me know, I would really appreciate any volunteers.
The other item is plans are underway to hold a "Bay Area Middle School Championship Meet" on Tuesday, November 10.  This is a unique opportunity to run against other middle school'ers from throughout the Bay Area.  It will be held in San Leandro and I believe there will be several races.  There are not yet a lot of details and the Rec Dept. has to approve our participation, but in order to find out the level of interest, can you please go to this link:
Click on "Bay Area XC Meet Sow of interest" and indicate if your child would be interested in running in it.  More details in the next bulletin.
Don't forget, the Piedmont Boosters Club now has a "blog" containing sports highlights including cross country, the link to it is:

Weekly Bulletin #6 - Week of 10/5

posted Oct 3, 2009, 3:13 PM by PMS Coach

Dear Piedmont Middle School Parents of Cross Country Runners:

We are at the half way point of our season, with just 5 weeks remaining.  I am very pleased with our team, not only in their running performance but in how they have conducted themselves and how much they appear to enjoy running.  The support of all the parents and Boosters Club has also been fantastic, so thank you.

Let me first review a couple of things about our upcoming schedule.  Monday, October 5th is a meet at Orinda Intermediate School and directions are attached.  The list of kids scheduled to participate is listed below. We have practice on Tuesday and Thursday as usual this week, again the kids need to make more of an effort to make it to practice on Tuesdays.
Next week, October 12 & 13 (Monday and Tuesday) are school holidays.  I am planning on holding practice on Monday the 12th, but would like your input if you think this is appropriate and what time would work best, I am thinking of Noon.  There would be no practice on Tuesday, the 13th.  As I mentioned last time, the plan is to do our annual run to Fenton's on October 29, so if you can re-arrange your schedules to have your child fit that in, it would be great.  Finally, the meet on October 26 will be at Mills College.  So comments/questions on the abouve

On Thursday, October 1, PMS hosted its annual meet at Temescal.  It was the largest meet in league history, with almost 300 runners participating!  Despite having to put on the race in a construction zone the parents and kids from all the schools cooperated to make it a very successful event.  Special thanks to my coaches who assisted me, David Weisgerber, and to the parent volunteers, James Carrington, Dane Copeland, and Eileen White.  It was quite a sight to see and because of the large numbers and narrow start, I split the 7 & 8th grade boys race into two separate races.  I am still working on the complete results and they will be available at this link:  http://www.pmscc.com
Some PMS highlights from the meet were, once again we fielded a complete 6th grade girls team, with Maddie Copeland leading the way in 3rd place, Madison Tenney in 11th, Alexandra Shoptaugh in 14th, Nicole Bilorusky in 21st and Megan Wilensky in 23rd. For the 6th grade boys, our top finisher was Kyle Bilorusky in 15th place. The 7th & 8th grade girls race was closely contested and several PMS runners finished high in the standings, with Anna Harleen leading the way in 3rd place, followed by Sofia Lautt 8th place, and Angel Rael 12th place in 7:49.
The 2nd to last race was the 7th grade boys and once again Piedmont had several kids in the top 12; Andrew Strauch 5th place, Thomas Horn 6th place, Miles Von Herman 11th place, and
Chase Betta 12th place.  The final race was the 8th grade boys and it was also a very competitive race with three PMS runners in the top 10, Kevin Wu in 5th place, Matthew Gologorsky in 7th place, and Andrew Jara in 10th place.  The "Piedmont Post" was at the race so look for an article in the upcoming edition.  Sorry I was too busy to take photos, if Paul Kuroda sends me a link to his, I will post it on our home page.

The Mileage Award data cumulative through 10/2 is attached and is also on our website.  If there are any errors please contact me.  If your child can only come to practice once a week due to another sport the other days, let me know and they will get credit for that.  A majority of the kids have earned Jamba Juice cards and several are up to the Fenton cards now.
The Gold Medal Awards this past week were to Anna Harleen, Everett Ellis, Angel Rael, Chase Betta, Thomas Horn, Lucy Skugstad, and Matthew Gologorsky.

There are still several kids on the team that have not received their Singlets and t-shirts.  If your child has not received a singlet, they should stop by the Rec Department and get one from David Weisgerber or Lenny Parker.  I will be handing out the t-shirts at practice, and have a list of the kids who still need one.
If you have any questions, please contact me.  So on October 1, please remind your child to bring their running attire (singlet) and shoes, and to walk right after school to the Piedmont Community Hall, 711 Highland Ave. where the drivers will meet them. Finally, coming up on Monday, October 5 is a meet at Orinda Intermediate School in Orinda.

Weekly Bulletin #5 - Week of 9/28

posted Sep 26, 2009, 10:26 AM by PMS Coach

Dear Piedmont Middle School Parents of Cross Country Runners:

Our first two meets went well and thank you to all the drivers and snack providers, plus parents who came to the meets to cheer on the kids.  I am very pleased with how well the kids ran in the meets and think we will have a successful and fun season.  A couple of items that parents and team members should keep in mind:
-  Your child may need a little snack before they run, something light.  Remember some of the kids may not run until 5:00 pm and need some energy, fruit is always good.
-  The kids should dress in layers, its warm right now, but as the season progresses it will get cooler.  Many kids just had on their singlets and shorts for the duration of the meets this past week.
-  Our meets will end by 5:30 in most cases.  Your child should be home between 6:00 to 6:30 p.m., the good news is from here on out, only one meet per week.
-  The last couple of Tuesday practices have been very lightly attended, if your child has no other required obligations, they need to come to practice, you get better as a runner by running.
-  Don't forget to try and have the kids do some running one day on the weekend, minimum 1 mile and maximum two miles and report it on-line: http://www.pmscc.com/parents
-  Our annual run to Fenton's will be in late October and due to our meet schedule it may be on a Tuesday Oct. 27 or Thursday Oct. 29, what is your preference? Please e-mail me.

Before I re-cap the meet results, let me talk about the upcoming week.  I will not be at practice on Sept. 28, Steven Merigold will take my place and we should have 3 coaches present.  Tuesday is a regular practice day.  Thursday, October 1, we host a meet at Temescal Park in Oakland, directions are attached.  Come support the team, for the only meet we host during the season.  Traditionally all the schools in our league attend and we expect around 200 runners in total.  At the end of this e-mail is the list of the kids scheduled to participate.  Please if your child is ill or otherwise can't make it, let me and the team parent coordinator for your grade know.  Speaking of which Dane Copeland has taken Cindy Baringer's place as the 6th grade team parent.  The timeline for the October 1 meet is:
  - 4:15 to 4:30 -- 6th grade girls race
  - 4:30 to 4:45  -- 6th grade boys race
  - 4:45 to 5:05 -- 7th & 8th grade girls race
  - 5:10 to 5:30  -- 7th & 8th grade boys race

This past week, we had two meets and the first one was at a unique venue, the infield of the Golden Gate Fields race track. 35 PMS runners participated in the meet and for many of the kids this was their first cross country meet ever.  The first race was the 6th grade boys division and PMS placed 3 boys in the top 11 runners, with Alex Harrison placing 9th, Kyle Bilorusky 10th, and Danny Young finishing in 11th place.  A total of 12-PMS 6th grade boys participated in the race, one of the largest squads in the league.  The next race was the 6th grade girls division, and Piedmont fielded a complete team of 5 or more girls.  Leading the way and finishing first by a rather large margin was Maddie Copeland.  Other PMS 6th grade girls who competed were Madison Tenney, Alexandra Shoptaugh, Nicole Bilorusky, and Megan Wilensky.  The 3rd race run that day was the 7& 8th grade combined boys division, Piedmont fielded a team of 15 runners.  Two PMS runners placed in the top 10, Kevin Wu finished in 3rd place, while Andrew Jara finished in 9th.  The final race of the day was the 7 & 8th grade combined girls division.  We were only able to field four girls for this race, but all of them ran well, with Sofia Lautt leading the way, followed by Sarah Ching, then Angel Rael, and Chloe Jiang.  Attached are "unofficial" results and times from the meet for just our runners.  Sorry but I am missing the times for a few boys.  Its up to each host school to provide official results, they will be posted on our website:  www.pmscc.com when I receive them.
On Thursday, September 24 the meet was at Prospect Sierra School in El Cerrito.  A total of
31 PMS runners participated.  Once again the kids ran extremely well and everyone should be proud of their effort.  Two or our girls got individual first places, with Maddie Copeland, 6th grade, winning rather handily, and 8th grader Annie Harleen coming from behind in the final stretch and winning her race.  Also running well for the 6th grade girls was Alexandra Shoptaugh in 6th place and Megan Wilensky in 8th place.  For the 7 & 8th grade girls, also running a good race was Angel Rael in 3rd place.  On the boys side, Kevin Wu - 8th grader got another 3rd place finish, Andrew Jara was 8th, and Chase Betta was 11th in the 7 & 8th grade race.  For the boys 6th grade team, Kyle Bilorusky finished in 10th place and Everett Ellis garnered 13th.  Again, once I receive the results from the host school I will post them.  Thanks to parent Paul Kuroda, we have lots of photos and videos from both meets.  The link is:
Also, photos can be found on our website at: http://www.pmscc.com/xc-photos

I don't have the Mileage Award Program data yet for this past week, it will be posted on our website, so check it on Sunday, but more and more kids are earning the Jamba Juice cards.
I awarded a number of Gold Medal Awards this past week and the kids who received them were
Michael Kuroda, Ava Podell, Andrew Jara, Sarah Ching, Dylan Porter, Maddie Copeland, Alex Harrison, Kevin Wu, and Sofia Lautt.  Regarding the Singlets and t-shirts.  If your child has not received a singlet, they should stop by the Rec Department and get one from David Weisgerber.
