Practice this Past Week and other Items
This was our final week of practice for the 6th graders.  It was highlighted by the run to Fenton's with about 30 kids participating.  Please note, I need the singlets that were checked out to your child returned to me after the championship meet.  I will be at the track on Tuesday, November 4th after school and the kids can drop it off then.  The plan is to utilize these singlets in the years ahead, so it is important that they be returned to me.

Practice Plans for this Week and other Items
This coming week, there will be practice on Monday for the 7 & 8th graders.  Coach Melissa will lead it, while I and the other coaches are at the 6th grade championship meet.  Our final practice will be on Tuesday, November 4.  There will be no practice on Wednesday.
Please note, I need the singlets that were checked out to your child returned to me after the championship meet.  I will be in touch with details on getting the singlets back to me.

Piedmont Turkey Trot
A Piedmont tradition, the Turkey Trot will be held on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27.  The race organizers are offering PMS cross country members a special entry fee rate of $10.  Please respond to this e-mail if your child is interested.  I will contact you with more details.

Special Midweek Bulletin

posted Oct 29, 2008, 8:49 AM by PMS Coach   [ updated Oct 29, 2008, 8:49 AM ]

Piedmont Middle Parents & Runners - Cross Country Team

I am back from vacation, a little jet lagged and tired but looking forward to the championship meets. I would like to thank everyone for taking care of things while I was gone, it sounds like things went well in my absence.

First, regarding Fenton's.  We will run there from Piedmont and will arrive around 4:00 p.m.  The plan is to have a limited menu, there will be just three options, a petite sundae for $4.12, a regular sundae for $7.50, and a 2 scoop-2 topping sundae for $10.  Any child using a gift card must order a 2 scoop sundae to keep things as simple as possible.   If you are paying by cash, please bring the exact amount.  If you want to pick your child up at Fenton's, that is fine.  One of the coaches will drive there with the backpacks for any kids who will be leaving directly from Fenton's.
Next, our championship meets are next week and this is the finale for us.  It is important that every child who can run in these meets be there, you never know what can happen, and the meet can be decided by the slimmest of margins.  The top 10 runners in each race are suppose to receive a trophy and every child will get a participant ribbon.  As was mentioned in the last bulletin, we would like to do a walk through of the course for each of the championships on Saturday.  Coach Steven will do Joaquin Miller at 1:00 p.m. and I will do Prospect Sierra at 1:00 p.m.  Please let me or Steven know if you would like to participate, it will take 30 minutes or less for the walk through and I will meet you there.  To make this work for me and Steven, we need at least 5 kids or more to plan to participate. We will confirm with you whether or not the walk through is taking place once we have the responses.
Third, I understand some 6th graders have developed whooping cough.  The symptoms I understand are similar to a cold and you should be aware that this has taken place.  I hope all the kids will be healthy and ready to run their best next week.
Finally, check our website for results about the meet at GG Fields.  Pictures are available at:
Any questions about the above, let me know.  Thanks.

Cross Country Parents and Runners,

This week we had two meets. On Monday we went out to Kennedy Grove to a meet hosted by El Sobrante. We had several top finishers including Jack Flynn/2nd, Pierce Constanti/4th, Angel Rael/10th, Jack Hamner/10th, and Anna Harleen/9th. Golden Gate Fields, Monday, October 27

Our final meet of the regular season is on Monday. The kids will get to run on the horse racecourse! It should be a lot of fun.

Fentons! Fentons! Fentons! Finally!!

For practice on Wednesday, we will be running to Fentons. We are trying to arrange special menu options for the kids to keep it simple and affordable. We will send out a special email bulletin next week with more details.

Championship Meets

The 6th grade championship meet will be November 3rd at Prospect Sierra and the 7th/8th grade championship meet will be November 6th at Joaquin Miller Park. In order to familiarize our runners with the courses, the coaches would like to meet with the kids on Saturday, November 1st for a preview. We would meet at the course location and run through the course once or twice. Parents would be responsible for getting kids there, waiting for 20-30 minutes and then taking them home. This course preview will be optional, but we feel will be a great benefit to our competitive runners in knowing what to expect for the championships.

Car Wash Fundraiser

Our car wash fundraiser is set for November 2nd from 11am-3pm at the Valero Gas Station. If your child can't volunteer to help, perhaps you can help by getting your cars washed! Kids have been given car wash tickets at practice. Cost is $10. Kids should return money and/or unsold tickets to coaches at practice next week. Here's how the volunteer schedule looks so far:

Dear Piedmont Middle School 6th, 7th, & 8th Grade Parents and Cross Country Runners:

I wanted to send out one final bulletin before I left on vacation.  Just a reminder, I will be on vacation from today until October 27, in my absence Steven Merigold will be in charge of the team.  During this period, please direct your inquiries to him as I will not be checking e-mail, phone calls, etc.  His contact information is:

Please utilize our website also to check the schedule, directions, meet results, etc.  The link is:   http://sites.google.com/site/piedmontxc/Home

On Monday we participated in a meet at Orinda Intermediate School, the results are not yet available.  A summary of the meet is as follows; several school records for this course were set by the PMS runners with the highlight being 8th grader Jane Linhares, running in her first meet of the season and winning the 1.25 mile
race, plus setting a school course record of 8 minutes and 19 seconds,
breaking the previous school record by 30 seconds.  Also, 7th grader Anna Harleen, running in her first ever cross country race and set a 7th grade girls record for this course in a time of 9 minutes and 12 seconds. For the 8th grade boys, Julian Frost had a fine race and finished 3rd overall in a time of 7 minutes and 47 seconds for the 1.25 mile course which was another school record. For the 6th graders, Chase Betta had another good race and stayed close on the heels of the leader most of the way and finished in 2nd place in a time of 6 minutes and 58 seconds for the 1 mile race.  Also, running well and finishing in 11th place was Thomas Horn with a time of 7 minutes and 27 seconds. For the 6th grade girls, Angel Rael continued to show the way for her teammates and in the process set a school course record in a time of 7 minutes and 33 seconds, with her 10th place finish.  Pictures from the meet can be found at: http://sites.google.com/site/piedmontxc/xc-photos
Gold Medal award winners for this past week are Banks Dotson, Thomas Horn, Jane Linhares, and Scott Hamner.

Our next meet is on Monday, October 13 at Rancho Laguna Park in Moraga.  Below is a list of the names of the kids scheduled to participate.  We have quite a few "Not Sure", please let Steven know if you plan on running in the meet, we hope you do.  This week I started handing out the new singlets to be worn in meets that were donated by a group of Piedmont parents to the team.  Please note these singlets are to be returned at the end of the season, so future teams can use them also.  Also, follow the instructions for washing and drying them.
Don't forget, our annual run/party to Fenton's will be on Wednesday, October 29.
Then on November 2 is the fundraiser car wash, volunteers are still needed, so if you can help that day, let Steven know.
Finally, the season is starting to enter the final weeks, but I expect everyone to remain consistent in their attendance at practice and expecially the meets.  These final weeks will help us be prepared for the championship meets which are the culmination of all our work this season.  I expect that when I return every runner will be ready to do their best in the championship meet. Thank you.

Dear Piedmont Middle School Parents and Cross Country Runners:

The season is moving into high gear, as the kids continue to add to their running experience with a meet every week.  This is a reminder, I will be on vacation from October 9 to October 27, in my absence Steven Merigold will be filling in for me.  During this period, please direct your inquiries to him as I will not be checking
e-mail, phone calls, etc.  His contact information is:

Please utilize our website also to check the schedule, directions, meet results, etc.  The link is:   http://sites.google.com/site/piedmontxc/Home

This past week there was a meet at Prospect-Sierra, the results are attached. It should be noted that in the judgment of the Race Director the 1st and 2nd finishers in the Boys race cut the course and were dropped to the bottom of the standings, moving everyone else up two sports.  The boys zigged when they should have zagged, I thought the infraction was insignificant, but its the race directors call. Pictures from the meet can be found at this link:
Matthew Gologorsky set a new PMS course record for 7th grade boys at the Prospect Sierra site, please see the complete list of course records at:
Gold Medal award winners for this past week are Chase Betta, Patty Lindsey, Julian Frost, and Madeline Hsu.

Coming up this week on Monday, there is a meet at Orinda, directions are attached.  Below is a list of names of participants, if I have missed anyone let me know, as we only have enough drivers for the kids on the list.  Please if your child is scheduled to run and can't, call Steven Merigold ASAP, we only want to have enough drivers as are needed.  Also, the weather is changeable this time of year.  Note, practices and meets are held rain or shine.  Don't assume that if it is raining that a meet will be canceled.  An e-mail bulletin will be sent if any meets are canceled due to weather.  Running in the rain is part of our sport, and the elements just make it more challenging.

Some upcoming activities, this week besides the meet on Monday, regular practice on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  On Tuesday we will include a stop at Mulberry's so the kids should bring their money.  On Wednesday there will be another raffle of running related prizes, so the kids are to bring their play money.  Don't forget, our annual run/party to Fenton's will be on Wednesday, October 29.

If you have any questions, contact me until Wednesday evening October 8, after that contact Steven Merigold.  Thank you.

Bulletin #5

posted Sep 28, 2008, 4:31 PM by PMS Coach   [ updated Sep 28, 2008, 4:34 PM ]

Dear Piedmont Middle School 7th & 8th Grade Parents and Cross Country Runners:

The PMS cross country team team hosted a league meet on September 25 at Temescal Regional Park in Oakland and a record 238 runners from 12 schools participated!  I would like to thank all the drivers, meet volunteers and kids who ran in the meet, it was really great.  Four different races took place during the afternoon, starting with 6th Grade Girls.  The one mile race took the girls on a circuit of the park and the highest finisher for PMS was Angel Rael in 4th place with a time of 7 minutes and 42 seconds.  PMS fielded a team of 8 girls in this race and unofficially tied with Albany for the team win.  Next up was the 6th Grade Boys race, also one mile.  Piedmont scored a 1-2 finish with Andrew Strauch first in a time of 7 minutes and 12 seconds, and Jack Flynn second.  PMS placed five boys in the top 11 runners to easily win the team title.

The 7th & 8th grade girls race was next on the agenda, race 1.25 miles.  PMS had five girls in the race, and the team's first finisher in 10th place was Amber Ellis in a time of 8 minutes and 33 seconds.  The last and largest race of the day with 87 runners, was the 7th & 8th grade boys race.  This was also the most competitive race of the day with the winner from Benicia winning by one second.  Piedmont's top finisher was Matt Leong in 5th.  Attached is a spreadsheet with the results, note there is a separate worksheet for each race.  Results can also be found on our website at:  http://sites.google.com/site/piedmontxc/meet-results
If you have trouble opening the attachment or with our website, please e-mail me.
Some pictures from the meet are also available: http://picasaweb.google.com/leonardmgoldman/MeetAtTemescalParkOn92508#

Gold Medal Award certificates (the kids suggested renaming this award) for their performance at this meet will be awarded to Jack Flynn, Sofia Lautt, Matthew Leong, and Jiselle Soss.

Next week, we have a meet on Thursday, October 2 at Prospect Sierra School in El Cerrito.  Our team parent coordinators are in the process of calling parents to arrange for drivers and snacks to the rest of the meets on our schedule, your support is much appreciated.  Please remind your child to walk to the Piedmont Community Hall parking lot right after school that day.  At the end of this message is a list of the kids running in the meet.  If there are any changes please let me know, note there are several children who I am not sure of their plans.
Directions to Prospect Sierra are attached and a map of the location can be found at:
Please note, when you arrive at the location, meet in the bleachers of the park. The tentative schedule of races is as follows:
  - 4:15 to 4:30 -- 6th grade boys race
  - 4:30 to 4:45  -- 6th grade girls race
  - 4:45 to 5:05 -- 7th & 8th grade boys race
  - 5:10 to 5:30  -- 7th & 8th grade girls race

A couple of items regarding the upcoming week.  There will be an "auction" of running related items on Monday and Tuesday, so the kids should bring their "play money" to practice to bid on the items.  I understand on Thursday the 7th graders have their "Medieval Banquet."  Based on past experience, if your child is running  in the meet, they shouldn't over indulge and eat to excess.  Enjoy the experience and eat, but remember they will be running in a race in about 4 1/2 hours from the time of the meal.
Finally, I wanted to alert everyone and I will remind the kids, I will be on vacation from October 9 through October 27.  Steven Merigold will be in charge while I am gone, he has assisted me the past 3 years and of course we have a number of other coaches who will be there.  My wife and I have scheduled a trip to Italy, this is my first Fall vacation since I started coaching cross country 6 years ago.  I will be back for the final week of the season and I am confident that everything will go smoothly.
Any questions, please contact me.  Thanks.

Bulletin # 4

Dear Piedmont Middle School Parents and Cross Country Runners:

Well, we've completed one month of our season, and our first meet was on Thursday; the team is shaping up nicely with almost 60 runners on our roster this year.  One item where I really need your cooperation is the "Show of Interest" form which is attached.
I need this returned in the next couple of days so we can start planning our car pooling.

First, about the meet last week.  A group of 30 PMS middle school'ers kicked off their 2008 season at Martin Luther King Middle School in Berkeley.  In the first race, 12 PMS 6th grade boys toed the start line for the 1 mile race.  The PMS runners quickly asserted themselves at the front of the pack and held their place as they toured the campus of the school.  The team placed five runners in the top 10, with Andrew Strauch leading the way in first place with a time of 7 minutes and 9 seconds.  In 2nd place was Jack Flynn, with a time of 7:20.  The 6th grade girls race was next and there were four PMS runners in the race.  Angel Rael led the first part of the race and eventually finished in the top ten with a time of 7:47.  For the 7 & 8th grade boys, PMS fielded a team of 9 runners and 2 placed in the top 10 led by 7th grader Matthew Gologorsky in 7th place and Jack Hamner in 9th place.  The final race of the day was the 7 & 8th grade girls race and the team had 5 girls in the race.  8th grader Amber Ellis led the way for the team is a time of 8:27. Unofficial results are below. A number of team records were set for this course and this can be found at:  http://sites.google.com/site/piedmontxc/meet-records-1
Also, photos from the meet can be found at:
http://picasaweb.google.com/leonardmgoldman/MLKCrossCountryMeet91808#
I have some t-shirts left behind after the meet and will bring them to practice.
Game ball certificates for their performance at this meet will be awarded to Andrew Strauch, Angel Rael, Matthew Gologorsky, and Amber Ellis.

Next week, we host our only regular season meet of the season at Temescal Park in Oakland on Thursday, September 25.  Please remind your child to walk to the Piedmont Community Hall parking lot right after school that day.  At the end of this message is a list of the kids running in the meet.  Please note, car pool arrangements have been set-up based on this list, and the parent drivers have re-arranged their schedule so they can drive.  Notify me if for some reason your child is unable to attend.  Directions to Temescal Park are attached and a map of the park can be found at:
Please note, park in the parking lot at the North end of the park. The tentative schedule of races is as follows:
  - 4:15 to 4:30 -- 6th grade girls race
  - 4:30 to 4:45  -- 6th grade boys race
  - 4:45 to 5:05 -- 7th & 8th grade girls race
  - 5:10 to 5:30  -- 7th & 8th grade boys race
I can use a couple of parent volunteers to help with the meet, please e-mail me if you can, you will still be able to watch the meet.

This past week was a busy one for the team (and coaches) with a number of different activities taking place.  This including handing out the team t-shirt which will continue for those kids that have not received their shirt yet.  This past week, we started handing out the Jamba Juice gift cards to those kids who have accumulated 20 or more miles thus far in the season.  In addition, we held our first "auction" of running related prizes with the kids using the cross country "bucks" that they have earned during practice.  I also distributed the free Icees donated by Mulberrys and on Wednesday the team ran over to Mulberrys for a snack.  Our coaching staff is in place and most of the kids have met all of them.  We are very lucky to have such a talented group, please check out their bios at:

Finally, if there is no objection, I would like to display the e-mail addresses rather than not show them.  If you would rather not have yours displayed, just let me know.  Planning ahead a bit, our annual visit to Fenton's is tentatively set for Wednesday October 29.  I know this date probably does not work for everyone, but perhaps you can re-arrange your child's schedule if they would like to participate.  Any questions, please contact me.  Thanks.

Dear Piedmont Middle School Parents and Cross Country Runners:

First, I wanted to make sure everyone knows that the meet scheduled for Monday (Sept. 15) has been cancelled by the host school.  We will have a regular practice instead on Monday, 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. at Witter Field.  Our first meet will be on Thursday, September 18 (Thursday) at Martin Luther King School in Berkeley and directions are attached.  The drivers to this meet will receive information in a separate e-mail from me.
At the end of this message is a list of the kids who have indicated to me they plan to run in the meet, if there are any changes, please let me know.
Attached is the "Show of Interest" form for the remainder of the season, I would like this back by September 22 or sooner.  The kids will have the opportunity to run at Golden Gate Fields in Albany on October 27, a unique venue for a race.

I would briefly like to review transportation plans for Thursday's meet, and please share this with your child.  While I have told the kids what to do and where to meet already, reinforcement helps.   The last bell on Thursday is at 3:05 p.m. and we need everyone running in the meet to leave school promptly and walk up Magnolia Ave. toward Piedmont Park.  The parent drivers will be waiting for the kids in the diagonal parking lot adjacent to the Piedmont Community Hall, 711 Highland Ave.  The kids can either change into their running attire at the meet or wear it under their regular clothing, changing into it prior to their last period.  They should wear running shorts or something similar and a t-shirt.  Our team t-shirts will be handed out this week at practice.  Please note, there is no practice on meet days, if your child is not running in the meet, they should go home after school.   Either a team parent coordinator, a Rec Department employee or a cross country coach will be at the parking area checking in the drivers and checking in the kids and putting them into the cars.  Since the 6th graders will be running first, we want to seat them in the cars first before the 7th & 8th graders.  The meet starts at 4:15 p.m. and I will be at the race site monitoring things and if possible trying to delay the start until our 6th graders can get there.

Due to traffic conditions, the kids may arrive with little time to warm-up, and if they do miss the start of their race they will have to run in the 7th & 8th grade race.  Unfortunately, the meet director may not be willing to hold up the meet just for us, if the other schools are there, but we will do the best we can.  The important thing is to give the kids the race experience and make it fun for them.
To give you some idea of the meet timeline, here is my best guess, based on past experience:
  - 4:15 to 4:30 -- 6th grade boys race
  - 4:30 to 4:45  -- 6th grade girls race
  - 4:45 to 5:05 -- 7th & 8th grade boys race
  - 5:10 to 5:30  -- 7th & 8th grade girls race
Once the 6th graders are done with their race, they are free to leave, or they can stay and cheer on their teammates.  I expect the entire meet will end around 5:30. The driver who brought them to the meet will take them home unless the parent/guardian comes to the meet to pick them up.  I hope as many of you that can will join us for the meet.  If you have any questions, about the meet or the logistics, please let me know.

Plans for this week are, practices on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  Please note, Wednesday, 9/17 is a minimum day and the kids get out of school at 12:40 p.m.  There will be practice that day at 3:30 p.m.  That day the 6th graders have a special event, "Bonanza."  If your child goes to this event they should not attend practice because that is too much time in the sun and they will already be tired, so please cooperate and have them go home after this activity.  This recommendation is based on past experience, practice is of little use to them when they are already in a very fatigued state.  On Wednesday, the kids will be running to "Mulberry's" where they can buy a treat with their own money.
Also, if your child is scheduled to run the "PE Mile" on a meet day and they are running in the meet, they should let the PE teacher know.  It is okay for them to jog the PE mile and not run all-out.  The teachers understand this and it is okay, as they will have other opportunities to run the PE mile for time.

A brief re-cap of last week, it was a good week for practicing and the kids did some good workouts.  We ran a "time trial course" to try and simulate what a cross country course is like, and I discussed with some of the groups of kids the meet format and how cross country scoring works, i.e., low score wins, first 5 finishers are your scorers and the other runners "off set" the runners from  the other schools.  A bit complicated but I think they get the general idea.  The important thing is participation and trying your best.  I have had teams win a championship by just showing up and finishing, so that's why having  5 runners is important.  Note, we are still accepting new kids into the program and we still need 6th, 7th & 8th grade girls.  I appreciate those kids who have brought their friends to check out practice this past week.
Finally, for the first time we had several kids who reached the "Bronze" level of the mileage incentive program and the kids received a medal for their effort.  In addition, every child who attended practice received a "Super Athlete Kit" courtesy of Togo's sandwiches.  On Thursday, we had a pizza party at the end of practice and we would like to thank Rustica Pizza for donating several pizzas for the party.  If you have any questions, let me know.  Thanks.

Dear Piedmont Middle School Parents of Cross Country Runners:

So far 50 kids have signed up for cross country, exceeding last year's number of 35. We really appreciate the support and interest in the program! Our 2nd week of practice was a short one due to the Labor Day holiday and the unseasonably warm weather. As a result the duration and intensity of the workouts were curtailed, more so for the 6th graders than the 7th & 8th graders. For the most part, we tried to avoid the track, where the reflected heat makes it even hotter, and ran in the surrounding area. We made good use of the agility ladders, to practice footwork and coordination, and the kids seemed to like it. The 6th graders did hill repeats with the game "run for the money" using play money and really got into trying to race for the money at the top of the hill. We took frequent water breaks and I provided a drink called "Joint Juice" to all the kids at each practice this week. All the snacks and drinks are donated, thanks to the generosity of sponsors with whom I have a running club relationship. One new sponsor is Mulberry's Market which has donated 50 free Icee's to team members.

I just wanted to reminded everyone, that we have a very short turnaround on determining which kids want to run in the meets during the month of September. See attached "show of interest form." I need your help in having this information returned to me as soon as possible. Again, either e-mail, call me, or have your child return this form to me, your cooperation is much appreciated. As I mentioned, I encourage every child to run in the meets and there is a league rule that a runner must have run in 3 regular season meets in order to compete in the championship meet. So I hope that every child will decide to run in at least 3 meets during the months of September and October. Attached is the schedule for the entire season. On the days we compete in meets, for those kids who decide not to run in the meet, there will not be a practice session. All the coaches will be at the meet.

Don't forget too, if you haven't registered your child for the cross country program with the Rec Department, it needs to be done as soon as possible.

Next week, the tempo of practices will pick up a bit, as we introduce some more intense running including a "time trial" which will simulate a cross country meet. The course will start on the track and the kids will run around the the adjacent area and finish back on the track. Don't forget to check out the team's website, and more information is being added on an on-going basis.
