Len started the PMS cross country program 8 years ago.  He has been a middle school cross country coach for 11 years and was also the first coach for the Orinda Intermediate School cross country program.  Len is a RRCA certified adult running coach, Past-President of the Lake Merritt Joggers and Striders running club, and has in recent years been a nationally ranked age-group road race runner.  Len has received national recognition from the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) on several occasions for his contributions to running and most recently was the 2012 recipient of the "Spirit of the RRCA" award.   Also in 2011, Len was selected by the Piedmont Recreation Department as its volunteer of the year and received the "Betty C. Howard Award" for his contributions to youth running in Piedmont.

Christine is a Piedmont resident and her son is on the high school cross country team.  She is an avid runner and regularly competes in
trail races, marathons, and ultra-marathons.  Recently she has served as a coach for the San Francisco Marathon training program and the Piedmont High track team, assisting with the distance events.  For the past several years, she has volunteered for the "Running For a Better Oakland" (RBO) program.  This will be her fourth year as a PMS cross country coach and she will be assuming the head coach responsibility for the 7&8th grade team.

Minori joined the cross country program in 2010 and this will be her fourth year as a coach.  She grew up participating in a number of sports, including swimming, gymnastics, ice skating and judo.  She was a competitive athlete in swimming and judo and holds a black belt in judo.  Minori has previous experience working with youth in judo and developed a training program for high school athletes on a national and international level for USJI (United States Judo Institute). This year Minori will be assuming responsibility as the head coach for the 6th grade team. 
Steven Merigold - Senior Assistant Coach
Steven is a Piedmont resident, and he and his wife have a daughter who attends Piedmont High.  Steven started running in high school
where he was a sprinter and jumper.  About 10 years ago, he made the transition to distance running and has been running ever since.
He has run one marathon, Chicago, and is a regular at the Lake Merritt runs.  He helped Len start the cross country program
8 years ago and has been part of the coaching staff ever since that time. 
Jeanine Holmlund - Assistant Coach


         Jeanine has worked with the middle school program for three years.  She
is both a Level 2 USATF and RRCA 
         certified 
coach. 
She has been a Cross Country and Track Coach for Stuart Hall and Convent High School since 2007. S
he is also a
         triathlon coach, in addition, she is coaching track for RUN365 SF Marathon training program, volunteer-coaching the Lake Merritt Joggers
         and Striders Intermediate track and Trail Fitness programs and helping administer the Oakland Marathon Training program as the 
         LMJS Board Training Director. She's a co-founder of the LMJS Women's Race team and races distances from the mile to the
         half marathon in both the Pacific Association USATF Club Road and Cross Country series. 

Oliver Wolken - Assistant Coach

         Oliver participated in track and cross country all four years of high school, being team captain 2 of the years. Oliver has
         participated in many invitational meets including the Stanford Invitational, Woody Wilson, and Arcadia Invitational. 
         He is currently a junior at San Francisco State University majoring in history.

Laury Fisher - Assistant Coach

         Laury has been a runner most of her adult life, 37 years and counting. She is a LMJS member and is on its Women’s racing team. She has
         also been a pacer for both the LMJS Half Marathon Training Program and Intermediate Track Class.  Laury was one of the early
         members of LMJS in in the late 1970's. She has competed at every distance from one mile to 50 miles (American River 50 Miler).  
         Laury is a USATF certified Level 1 coach and her goal has always been to run forever. This will be her first experience coaching kids, 
         but she has three grandsons ages 12, 10 and 7.

Ryan Neely - Assistant Coach

         Ryan is a UC Berkeley graduate student working on his PhD in Neuroscience (brain-computer interface).  While in high school his team 
         won 4 cross country state championships and 1 track championship.  In college, he ran for Harvard and competed in cross country and
         indoor/outdoor track.  Since moving to the West Coast, he has run a number of marathons and half marathons with a best of 2:29:40 
         and 1:11:51 respectively for these distances.  He has run one ultra-race, a 50K.  This will be Ryan's first coaching experience.   

Samantha Beardsley - Assistant Coach
         Samantha is a PhD student in Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley. She started running track and cross country in 8th grade,
         She was on the state champion track team her senior year in high school, and transitioned to running marathons in college. 
         Since moving to Berkeley in 2011, she ran her first ultra-marathon and sees many more in her future. Samantha has worked with
         kids in many capacities before, but this will be her first coaching experience and she is excited to share her love and respect for 
         running with others.

 COACHES FOR 2013 CROSS COUNTRY SEASON
 Nate Van Nortwick - Assistant Coach

         Nate was on the football and wrestling team in high school, started swimming to stay healthy during college, and started running
         regularly in 2007. In 2010 a friend convinced him to sign up for his first 50k (NFEC 50k), and he has been enthralled with running races
         ever since. Nate loves running on trails and up mountains. He will be running the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run this June.  He
         is also a volunteer with the youth running group, Running for a Better Oakland (RBO). 

Sarah Smith - Assistant Coach
         
Sarah Lavender Smith of Piedmont is a road and trail runner who races distances ranging from the 5K to 100K. She has
         completed more than 40 marathons and ultra-marathon races, often winning her division. She has a 6th-grade son, Kyle, 
         and 9th-grade daughter, Colly.
            

Kathryn Dernham - Assistant Coach

         Kathryn started running 10 years ago after spending 10 years as a step aerobic and yoga instructor in Washington State. Her first 
         official race was 3 years ago and has since run 10 half marathons and is running her 5th marathon this October. She is a member
         of the LMJS Women's racing team and has volunteered as a pacer for both the LMJS Marathon Training Program and the 
         Intermediate Track Class. This is her first year an assistant PMS Cross Country Coach.

Jack Wallace - Assistant Coach

         Jack started running as a freshmen in high school in 2004 and has always been striving to improve himself ever since. He has run
         in many races ranging from the mile to the half marathon. He coached the Cal Running Club from 2009 to 2012 and served as
         the co-president of the club for two years. He has been racing for Berkeley's Strawberry Canyon Track Club since 2009. 
         In 2012 Jack become the East bay Cross Country Triple Crown Champion. This is his first year coaching PMS and he is excited to
         share his love of ruuning with the next generation of runners. One day Jack plans on running the Badwater Ultra marathon.

May Funabiki - Assistant Coach

         May Funabiki has enjoyed running for cardio exercise for over 10 years. She trained for her first 1/2 marathon in 2011 and has
         since completed 5. She is an ACE-certified group fitness trainer. She is a member of the Lake Merritt Joggers & Striders and has
         participated in the LMJS Intermediate Running Class the past 2 years. This will be her first year coaching cross country
